Termite’s Subterranean species, which build underground nests, are a concern in every state of Australia except Tasmania. They are extremely destructive, because they tunnel their way to wooden structures to obtain food. Termites all share a virtually insatiable appetite for wood and other cellulose-containing materials. Given enough time, they will feed on the wood until nothing is left but a shell.
The Difference between a Termite & Ant Both have two pairs of wings, but ants' wings are different sizes while termite's wings are all the same size. Also, ants have narrowed waists and elbowed antennae while termites have thick waists and short, straight antennae that resemble strings of beads. Don't be fooled by colour or size. Ants can vary in size, and winged termites can be brown or black like ants.
Signs of Termites around your House You’re more likely to discover you have a white-ant problem by discovering the evidence they leave behind rather than the actual insects themselves. If you encounter any of these telltale signs, there's a good chance termites are busy snacking on your home:
- Piles of small, delicate wings shed
- Small piles of sawdust
- Mud tubes built for travel above ground
- Damaged or hollow sounding wood
- Pinholes in drywall or wallpaper
If you don’t see any of these it is no guarantee that you don’t have some munching out somewhere. If you are buying a house you are more likely to miss these signs, so give due attention to your purchase & if in doubt call an expert out. Remember insurance companies are not likely to pay you for your misfortune and if you have had any experience with rectifying termite damage you will know it can be very expensive. Even if you have a termite inspection prior to purchase its no 100% guarantee as all areas are not accessible for inspection and companies have learn’t how to minimize their liabilities so chances of a quick payout for a flunked inspection are minimal. In others words buyer beware. Do your own home work. See if the previous owner has any termite barriers in place and ask for a copy of the last report done. Have the neighbours had any problems?
